BitaGreen has joined forces with ICATALIST to empower urban dwellers in addressing the pressing challenges posed by the triple crises of health, biodiversity, and climate.
Over the past years, these crises have heightened anxiety levels, particularly among urban youth, underscoring the vital role of urban nature in fostering resilience. In response, our project offers an innovative solution aimed at engaging decision-makers and citizens in co-creating a more resilient and nature-positive urban environment.
We created "Adapting Cities," a serious game on urban resilience tailored for diverse groups of players, including school youth and municipal stakeholders. This interactive tool enables participants to design scenarios of green infrastructure for their districts, showcasing how elements like green roofs, rain gardens, and urban trees can mitigate climate-related risks and enhance overall quality of life. What started as a board game on climate adaptation by ICATALIST, is now supported by BitaGreen’s nature and climate modeling and powered by Unity, allowing the game to provide a quantitative assessment of green infrastructure benefits, ranging from reduced flooding to improved air quality and biodiversity.
Our gamebuilds on state-of-the-art scientific research, promotes environmental education and civic engagement and empowers young people to become active agents of change in their communities. Through hands-on gameplay and real-world simulations, players gain a deeper understanding of climate adaptation strategies and the importance of green infrastructure in building resilience.
Moreover, "Adapting Cities" serves as a valuable tool for municipal decision-makers, offering insights into the economic, social, and environmental returns on investment in green infrastructure. By facilitating collaborative planning and informed decision-making, the game fosters a culture of sustainability and innovation within local governments.
